Summer Resources

Summer Resources!

Summer is a great time to encourage your student to dive deeper
into content they love! We have created an Online Resources Padlet
to give some resources for students to explore! See HERE for a
guide on how to use padlet!
You and your family will have free EPIC reading use until June 30th.
After that, you will be prompted to pay a monthly subscription.
For free options, check out the padlet (link above)!
If any passwords/logins are required, they are on the activity or
they are your students previous login!
There are also resources for the DINO lovers, the scientists,
the historians, the mathematicians, and every student in between!
Our resources were gathered by coaches (shout out to Mrs. Elliot,
Ms. Sirois, and Mrs. Lawrence!), staff (hey-yo Ms. Dee!!!), and your
2nd grade teachers (Ms. Richards, Mrs. Southard, Mrs. Lyons, and
Ms. Sissel). You can send us emails by clicking on the teacher's name
above but responses may be delayed during summer months!

We wish you and your family a happy, safe, and healthy summer!

Internet Safety Tips!

Have you wondered how long your child should be using technology in a day?  Are you worried about keeping your child safe on the internet?  Here are some tips from the Second Grade team!

5 Healthy Media Habits to Teach our Children!

1. Set limits on the amount of time as well as the apps and videos your child is watching.

2. Check ratings and make sure all apps and videos are age-appropriate.

3. Turn off all screens at least an hour before bed!  And create "tech-free" zones, like mealtimes.

4. Ask questions about kids' favorite games, shows, and characters.  Discuss ideas and issues they read about or learn about through TV and video games.

5. Walk the walk--Be a good role model for your child!

See https://www.commonsensemedia.org/blog/new-healthy-media-habits-for-young-kids for more information on this important topic!

Save the Date!

Cooking Classes

In Second Grade, students have been participating in weekly cooking classes with Cultivating Community.  All classes have been learning about where our food comes from, vitamins and minerals and how they keep us healthy, and how to prepare tasty meals!  We have made a variety of healthy recipes, from kale salad to blueberry smoothies, and tabouli.  These lessons add onto what we learned in our fall gardening classes and will set the foundation for what we will learn about the Riverton community garden in the spring.  What a wonderful addition Cultivating Community has been to our science curriculum!

Welcome to a New Year in Second Grade!

Hello Families!
We have so enjoyed having your student.  Below are some things we want you to know about Second Grade.

Behavior Expectations
Although each class has their own classroom contract, we follow the Riverton School rules: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Cooperative.  Students can receive a green ticket every time they are "caught" following the school rules.  When a student collects 100 green tickets they are honored throughout the school!

Homework
Second Grade made a decision this year to assign little homework.  Instead, we hope that you spend time with your student and play games, read books, and enjoy the outdoors.  The only homework requirement is for students to read Monday through Thursday for 15 minutes a night.

Schedule

Curriculum
We will update you on our classroom curriculum throughout the year.  We hope you enjoy the pictures that give a peek into what students are doing at school!  In general we use Every Day Math and the Teachers College Reading and Writing programs.
