Happy October!

Happy October!
What a busy month this has been.  We've had a wonderful field trip to Snell Family Farm with our gardening class.  We were able to pull up carrots; sample kale, carrots, apples, bok choy, and berries; and learn about how the farm runs.

Gardening has been a creative and fun way for us to get to know all about fruits and vegetables that are native to Maine.  We've learned a song that helps us remember the parts of a plant and sorted pictures by the part.  We also counted the number of seeds in a pumpkin--did you know they have over 400 seeds?

Welcome to Second Grade

Hello Families!
We have so enjoyed having your student.  Below are some things we want you to know about Second Grade.

Behavior Expectations
Although each class has their own classroom contract, we follow the Riverton School rules: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Cooperative.  Students can receive a green ticket every time they are "caught" following the school rules.  When a student collects 100 green tickets they are honored throughout the school!

Homework
Second Grade made a decision this year to assign little homework.  Instead, we hope that you spend time with your student and play games, read books, and enjoy the outdoors.  The only homework requirement is for students to read Monday through Thursday for 15 minutes a night.  A reading log goes home once a month; please have your student return their reading log every Friday so that we can track their progress at school.

Schedule

Curriculum
We will update you on our classroom curriculum, monthly.  We hope you enjoy the pictures that give a peek into what students are doing at school!  In general we use Every Day Math and the Teachers College Reading and Writing programs.
